Nextel Communications is a telecommunications company providing fully integrated, all-digital wireless service. The Nextel National Network was designed to provide service to thousands of communities across the United States including 182 of the top 200 markets. Cassidy & Pinkard was competitively selected to provide services on a national basis for Nextel’s program and construction management as well as a facilities management program that would support the national roll out. Cassidy & Pinkard also delivered project management services for numerous new administrative and sales offices and construction services for all of Nextel’s call center sites in the United States. We managed programming, procurement and construction, national vendors, occupancy and turnover to Operations. Due to its extensive penetration into national markets, Nextel required that all of its facilities meet high standards so that there would be a consistency of appearance, functionality, and flexibility across the country. The large number of locations required Cassidy & Pinkard to interface with over 100 local jurisdictions for permitting and occupancy, as well as manage 20 general contractors and 15 AE design teams. In addition, fast-track schedules, management levels and costs needed to be aggressively managed.
The extensive coverage of Nextel’s construction management and program management needs evolved into Cassidy & Pinkard being retained to perform project management services for Nextel’s technical switch centers. Overall benefits to Nextel included:
- Successful coordination with regional contractors and consultants to ensure that Nextel’s drive for expansion was met with focus and attention to detail.
- Authoring of an “Office Development Handbook.”
- Value engineering resulting in savings of over 15% in standard interior build-out packages.
- The creation of the Facilities Management staff that directed the national roll out.
Cassidy & Pinkard supported 36 of Nextel’s locations, representing over 2.4 million square feet. |
